What is a Sweet 16?
So what exactly is a Sweet Sixteen Birthday Party? It’s a time to celebrate a teenage girl’s passage to early adulthood. Thanks to social media and society, many interpret this teen party to be an extremely formal event that is held to welcome the girl into another state of maturity in her life. It is considered to be one of the most important birthdays in a girl’s life!
And while this is an important right of passage, it doesn’t mean that it has to break the bank and can’t be special without going over-the-top!

How to plan a Sweet 16
1. Decide on a Theme
First thing when planning a Sweet 16 Birthday Party, make sure you decide on a theme! This will help you determine your budget, as well as help to set up all of the things you’ll need for the Sweet 16 decorations and supplies. It’s also the perfect time to talk to your teen on what type of budget you are working with, so it doesn’t fall apart later in the planning process!
2. Choose Decorations and Party Supplies
You definitely need that theme set before working on the Sweet 16 Party Decorations! Depending on what your theme is, along with where the event will be held, will determine how little or how much decorating you will need to worry about.
And don’t worry if you’re working with a tight budget. Many of the decorations for a Sweet 16 can be made yourself. Centerpieces for tables? This could be a fun DIY project for your daughter to be a part of! Involve the birthday girl and her friends in the DIY process. They will have a total blast!
3. Decide on Party Food
This should be easy, depending on what your theme is! If you are having the party at a restaurant, it will simply be a matter of working with the point person at the venue on what they offer and what will work for your group. Are you going to have a sit-down dinner or simply appetizers for everyone to snack on?
If you are having an at-home Sweet Sixteen celebration, this may take a little more work. If you cater in the event, again, you’ll only have to work with the caterer on specific requests, depending on your decisions. But if you’re looking to save additional money, you may want to work with extended family on making it a potluck and making sure the appropriate food items are made and brought.
This is also the time when you can pick out desserts with your teen. While you are on a budget, splurging on a cake is an easy win, as it can be seen as a great centerpiece for your event, as well. Or maybe your teen doesn’t even want a cake and would prefer a cupcake stand or cake pops. Regardless, this should be an area of party planning that won’t take an overabundance of time. Just get with your daughter and see what she likes and wants to include. She knows herself and her friends better than anyone, so coordinating with her first is key for the menu.
4. Pick Party Games and Activities
Your daughter will definitely have some strong opinions on this portion of party planning! She will more than likely have thoughts in her head, based on what her and her friends have talked about and what she has seen at other Sweet Sixteen parties she has attended.
Overall, it’s wise to choose just a couple of games for everyone to enjoy. Usually, teens are “too cool” to do too much when it comes to party games, so you don’t want to spend a lot of time, planning and money on this when it won’t really be a big highlight of the night!

Sweet 16 Party Ideas on a Budget
Having Sweet 16 Party Ideas may be something your child has been thinking of all year, but it’s best to sit them down early in the planning process to make sure everyone is on the same page. Set the stage early so there is no confusion or disappointment in what you are expecting to pay!
After you discuss budget options with your child, make sure they are able to convey to you their “wish list” and what they envision having at their Sweet Sixteen. Maybe they had their heart set on a party at a fancy restaurant they love, which may be doable if they are willing to keep it intimate with only a few close friends and immediate family.
Or perhaps they would rather cater in to the family home, where they will be able to still enjoy the yummy food, but with a bigger guest list that they can invite? It’s all about prioritizing and figuring out what are the most important things on your birthday girl’s wish list.
2. Choose A Reasonable Theme
There are definitely themes that are more budget-friendly than others.
Does your girl want an all-out spa day? Perhaps renting a hotel suite with a few of her besties, than recruiting friends and family to help with DIY “Spa Services” would work instead of ponying up for multiple girls to hit the “real” spa! It’s all about being creative!
Same with a luau theme. You don’t need a fancy pool or an entire roasted pig to pull it off. Luau decor is especially easy to find, cheap, and you may have a lot of friends and family that already have a lot of this type of decor that you could potentially borrow!
Instead of hiring a DJ or band, like we know some birthday girls would absolutely die for, help to keep costs in line by piping in the tunes from Pandora or your iTunes playlists to keep the party moving. Spend some time with your soon-to-be birthday girl to set up a playlist that will work for everyone, adults and teens combined!
You can even set up a playlist that may be more teen-friendly (yet parent approved) for when more of the older guests leave later in the evening. It’s a win-win and a great way to save some money!
Set up an E-vite invitation for all of the guests, or set up an event in social media that you will be able to invite guests to. If your teen has watched any of MTV’s “My Sweet Sixteen” episodes, they may expect stretched limos to personally invite each and every guest! We joke. But this is a great way to keep costs inline by doing online birthday invitations. And since many of the guests are young and totally technologically savvy, this may make sense for more reasons than one!
While your birthday girl will definitely be the center of attention, that doesn’t mean you have to spend a small fortune on her Sweet Sixteen dress or outfit! Cocktail dresses are typically less expensive than ball gowns. You may even be able to snag a great pre-owned dress that was only worn once, as well! Check out eBay, Craigslist, your local Facebook selling groups, or even a consignment shop.
If this fails and your girl is absolutely set on saying yes to a more expensive dress, you can also try to negotiate with her that you will sell it on a selling website or consignment store to recoup some of the cost, after her event.
You may also want to think about having a “pampering party” before her big event, where maybe an aunt, grandmother, or close family friend can do hair and make-up for the birthday girl. That will save a ton of money versus heading to the salon and paying for a professional up-do and makeup!
Sweet 16 Party Games and Activities
Games can always be hit-or-miss when it comes to the teen crowd, but these ideas should be safe options:
1. Fashion Show
While it’s not necessarily a game, per se, it’s still a fun way to get all of the guests pumped about the event! Set up a box of hats, makeup, accessories, and whatever else you can think of, create your “catwalk” and have guests strut their stuff! You can even have prizes for things like “most unique”, “best dressed”, “best walk”, etc.! Create your own Project Runway!
2. Lip Sync Contests
Thanks to all of the great reality TV shows that highlight singing, this one should be a hit! Get a list of songs together, old-school and new, and all of the guests can pick out of a hat on what their song will be. It’s the perfect way to get everyone’s inner diva out, and it’s never too old to belt out an old favorite, even it’s it just lip-syncing!
3. Scavenger Hunt
Scavenger hunts never go out of style! This is a great way to incorporate the theme, if you so choose, as well! Find some great scavenger hunt ideas here!
4. The Candle Ceremony
One amazing activity to do at a Sweet Sixteen party is The Candle Ceremony. Sixteen candles are lit, each one representing a special person in the birthday girl’s life. People like parents, siblings, grandparents, aunts, uncles, teachers, coaches, or close friends are generally people that the birthday girl looks up to in her life and what a great way to celebrate those relationships, as well!
