Little Lumberjack 1st Birthday Party Ideas

little-lumberjack-first-birthday-partyThis adorable celebration features the cutest and most clever Little Lumberjack 1st Birthday Party Ideas! The guest of honor was Little Lumberjack Landon – Laurie’s son who was turning 1! The party – woodsy, casual and inviting, was held at Laurie’s home.

From Mom Laurie: “He’s the sweetest baby with a fun personality, and he loves to eat! He hasn’t met a food he doesn’t like, which is another reason I thought the Lumberjack theme was fitting. Our home backs up to the woods, and since the party was in the winter I thought a Lumberjack theme would be perfectly woodsy, casual and inviting. It just seemed fun and different from most other parties I’ve seen.”

Theme: Little Lumberjack 1st Birthday Party
Colors: Red, Tan and Black
Number of guests: 23 adults, 9 kids and babies
Venue: Laurie’s Home

little-lumberjack-party-invitations“I designed and assembled the invitations. I wanted a font that was a little rough and informal mixed with a handwriting font appropriate for a kid’s party. I thought that adding in the beard facts would be a fun addition. The Kraft paper envelopes and enclosures were the perfect material for the woodsy theme, and I lined each envelope with a wood grain paper. I tied each invitation with a red and white twine to match the theme colors.”

lumberjack-dessert-table“I took a lot of Pinterest and Google ideas and tried to make them my own. Then when I was out shopping for items (online or in the store) I found other things I thought would work perfectly for the theme.” A rustic dessert table featured cupcakes, S’mores, cookies, and a flapjack cake.”

“I made the Happy Birthday banner above the high chair and the “1” banner that hung above the dessert station. I measured and cut the pieces from burlap, then stenciled the letters, number and lumberjack axes (tying in to the invitations) using acrylic paint and a foam brush. I printed the food sign cards using the same font as the invitations and layering the cream cardstock onto Kraft cardstock.”

lumberjack-party-desserts“The flapjack cake was my absolute favorite! It was amazing! I loved how the dessert station came together with the cut pieces of wood to display items, and of course I loved the burlap banners that I made myself.”

lumberjack-party-mason-jars“I loved making the “whiskey” bottles and the drink station with mason jar handled mugs, complete with birch pattern paper straws.”

red-velvet-cupcakesDesserts on the dessert table included red velvet cupcakes from Fresh Bakes.

sugar-cookiesHow fun are these flapjack sugar cookies from Fresh Bakes ?!

maple-bacon-cupcakesMaple bacon cupcakes were also a fun twist on the desserts. The cupcakes were made by Fresh Bakes.

smores-stationA S’mores station was on hand for guests surrounded by a wood crate and logs that give the display a fun, rustic setting.

lumberjack-birthday-party-marshmallows“We had a S’mores station with homemade marshmallows (vanilla, strawberry and chocolate).”

chocolate-hazlenut-cupcakesThe smash cake (which looked like a stack of flapjacks), cupcakes (mini maple bacon which everyone raved about, and red velvet and chocolate hazelnut for some of the red/black theme) and flapjack sugar cookies were from Fresh Bakes. We had a pumpkin “log.”

hot-chocolate-bar“There was a drink station – one side with cider in whiskey bottles, and the other side with a make-your-own hot chocolate station, where adults could add in Bailey’s Irish Creme or amaretto if they wished. I also had homemade Bailey’s marshmallows.”

apple-cidar“I bought whiskey-shaped bottles and designed and printed my own labels for the whiskey (cider) drink station.”

lumberjack-party-wooden-utensilsFun lumberjack napkins and wooden utensils fit the theme perfectly!

lumberjack-party-food“Easy finger foods that I tried to tie into the theme were breakfast-type items (since Lumberjacks are known for eating a hearty breakfast) such as mini quiches, muffins and orange “wedges.” I had a few other items as a play on words, such as a cheese “board” and veggie “sticks.” I prepped most of the bites myself, though I did get the finger sandwiches from Wegman’s catering department.”

lumberjack-party-favors“The favors were S’mores to take home. I bought candy bags and layered the inside with either cinnamon sugar or chocolate graham cracker, Hershey’s chocolate, a homemade marshmallow (vanilla, strawberry or chocolate), and a graham cracker on top. I tied each package with the same red and white twine used on the invitations and attached a tag that read “Thank you for making my party s’more fun!””

lumberjack-birthday-party-thank-you-cardsFun birch patterned thank you cards matched the paper straws and tied into the the outdoorsy feel of the party.

  1. This is so adorable!! I want to recreate several aspects of this, but I can’t tell how they made the flapjacks smash cake … is that several thin cakes stacked or one cake with indentions? And is that fondant all over? Ganache for syrup?? Thanks for your help! 😀

    1. I believe the fondant was wrapped in stacked layers around the cake. I have no idea what my cake designer used for the syrup – sorry!

  2. Hi Laurie,
I am not sure if you will see this or not,but I noticed you made the labels for the whisky bottles yourself. I was curious if you could direct me to someone or if you do those to sell for other people. I am just so in love with that idea and having a really hard time finding someone to make it similar to yours. I would really appreciate your help. 🙂

  3. Love the theme…will be using for my son’s first birthday! Having trouble finding buffalo plaid napkins and tablecloths! Help please!!!!

    1. I can’t find them anywhere either. The only place is zazzle but they are ridiculously expensive. I wish I had someone to plot an order with! I only need about 30zzz

      1. If you can’t find them anywhere, I would recommend buying both red and black napkins and wrapping up cutlery with a mix of the 2 colors. Find a buffalo plaid pattern on another element to use in your display and tie in the colors that way.

  4. Hi!

I have someone to make the cake. But I wanted some insight about how the actual cake smash went. My cake lady said fondant isn’t the best for a cake smash because it isn’t as “smash-able” as regular cake/icing. She said it might not be as easy for baby to smash & dig in & won’t be as messy and fun as normal cake. Also not as yummy. Any thoughts on this? Do you wish you used regular cake/icing instead of fondant or was it kid as successful? Thanks in advance for your help!

    1. Hi Kelly, thanks for stopping by the blog! Yes, fondant is not the best for a cake smash. I would use it just for the regular birthday cake, but many people don’t eat it because it’s not too tasty. The fondant just makes the cake look nice. Once you peel the fondant off there is icing under it, so people usually peel it off the cake. I would stick with buttercream icing for the smash cake.

  5. where did you find the bags you put the wooden utensils in?? also adorable party! i hope my lumberjack one turns out anything close to this
